Spay Day Prevents Over 400 New Cat Births! IndyFeral's first Spay Day of the year was a big success. A joint effort between Indy Feral and Spay-Neuter Services of Indiana (SNSI) resulted in the spay/neuter of 74 cats on February 22. With the help of Indianapolis area veterinarians volunteering their time, the first Spay Day of the year prevented over 400 unnecessary kitten births. This is a huge number considering; breeding females have on average 2-3 litters per year consisting of 4.5 kittens per litter. If left unaltered, those 74 cats could possibly result in more than 14,000 additional cats in just three years. Marion County already has an estimated 178,000 free roaming cats. "We cannot adopt our way out of this problem," said Lisa Tudor, IndyFeral President. "With more cats than there are homes, the only way to make a dent in the growing population is through spay/neuter initiatives. February's Spay Day was the first of many planned this year. Through donations and volunteers, we hope to reach our goal of 2500 surgeries in 2004." SNSI and IndyFeral encourage people to be a part of the overpopulation solution by: spaying/neutering their own animals, donating time or money to spay/neuter initiatives, or calling IndyFeral's "feral line" at 317.596.2300 if you are feeding any free-roaming cats or know of any colonies. In an effort to promote February as National Spay Neuter Month, SNSI sponsored 30 surgeries for IndyFeral's recent Spay Day.
